Luis Hope Scholarship

“The support I receive is extremely motivating for me and makes me want to work hard, on and off the field.”

When I first applied to college I was told I would be charged out of state tuition and pay what some people pay in rent each month. My parents told me they were going to do whatever it took for me to be able stay in college and keep playing soccer, and with the Hope Scholarship I’m able to stay at PVCC and continue my education. The support I receive is extremely motivating for me and makes me want to work hard, on and off the field.

My family and I are grateful that I have the opportunity to continue my education. This means so much for us. I chose to attend Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) mainly for the welcoming faculty, strong academics and the soccer program. I feel the people at PVCC are willing to do anything to help guide me in the right direction for a successful future. I study criminal justice at PVCC and hope to become a police officer, so I can give back to the community where I grew up. I’m also one of the starting goalkeepers on the men’s soccer team where I’ve had the opportunity to help the program become a conference contender for the first time in three years.

My parents and I work as janitors cleaning schools as our primary source of income. I have started to work extra hours at night to help cover the costs of my education. The Hope Scholarship allows me to continue to pursue my goal to become a part of change in my community, as well as to play soccer, which has opened many doors for me and brought me so much joy and success. My goal has always been to play college soccer and get a Division 1 scholarship.

My mom always tells me the right people are always placed in your path. That’s how I felt when I applied for and received the Hope Scholarship. It is definitely a tremendous help for my family and I will forever be grateful for the opportunity. I will do my best and promise that I will give 110% of effort to whatever it is I do.

The Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation established the Hope Scholarship to help students who have to pay out-of-state tuition. The Hope Scholarship along with other scholarships is helping students keep their dreams alive.
