Connecting With Our Community
April is a month of opportunity for the Maricopa Community Colleges veteran community. Not only do we celebrate our participation in Arizona Gives Day, we bring you the chance to connect with us at a book signing recording the history of our local veterans.  We also introduce you to one of the trainings  that our Maricopa Community College faculty and staff receive to support our veteran students, recap our participation in a local community event, and provide you with an update of our newest Veterans Success Center.

Maricopa Community Colleges Unite for Veterans Stand Down Alliance Event
Seventy five Maricopa Community College employees and students assisted Maricopa Learns Through Service (MLTS) and Valley of the Sun United Way at the annual Arizona Veterans StandDown Alliance (AVSA) on January 25 – 26, 2018. Part of the Arizona Housing Coalition, AVSA holds annual events and resource fairs in 12 of Arizona’s 15 counties to help homeless veterans and their families connect with Valley of the Sun United Way for support services.

Faculty and Staff Receive Green Zone BasicTraining
The Maricopa Veteran Education Taskforce invited all Maricopa Community College faculty and staff to participate in ‘Green Zone Basic Training’ on March 22, 2018 at South Mountain Community College (SMCC).

In partnership with the Center for Employee and Organizational Development, the training was designed to teach participants about student veterans, their experiences on campus, and how to cater to them. Participants gained a deeper understanding of military culture and common challenges that student veterans and employees face.  These trained individuals are now able to lend a sympathetic ear and connect those in need with helpful resources.

Veterans Heritage Project Book Signing To Be Held April 24th
In our second year of collaboration with the Veterans Heritage Project Maricopa Community College District students have conducted nearly 100 interviews with veterans, spanning from World War II through the global war on terror.  Many of the veterans who have been interviewed are students, faculty, and staff members at the Maricopa Community Colleges.

The project seeks to bring to life Maricopa’s commitment to veterans at each of our colleges.  These veteran accounts of service are collected in annual volumes entitled, Since You Asked, in order to preserve them for future generations with the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress in Washington DC.
We will be holding a book signing for this year’s edition of Since You Asked on April 24th, from 1-3pm, at Paradise Valley Community College.  For more details, click here.

Your Support Matters
You can make a difference in the lives of our veterans by making a gift to the Veterans Success Project today through the Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation.  Not only will your gift provide veterans with the essentials they need, it will go towards long-lasting assistance towards Veterans Centers and other proposed items within the Project, dependent on raising funds to support them.

It’s an honor that U.S. veterans, active reservists, and family members of veterans are among our student body. Both active-duty military personnel and veterans often seek educational support and job training to transition from military service to civilian life, and many will start with a community college.

At Maricopa Community Colleges, services for military personnel and veterans are designed to offer the highest quality assistance. We have a long history of providing education and training, allowing you to enhance existing skills, gain new skills, and translate military training and experience into a rewarding career.

We have an established tradition of providing access to higher education – in other words, we are dedicated to serving those who serve.

All of our colleges have received the Veteran Supportive Campus designation by the Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services. Additionally, MCCCD is a partner organization of the Military/Veteran Resource Network.

The Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization designated by the Maricopa County Community College District to receive and manage gifts on behalf of its ten colleges, two skill centers and multiple satellite centers. The Foundation actively seeks contributions from a variety of public and private sources including individuals, corporations and other foundations. It acts as a trustee for donations to assure that gifts are distributed in the manner specified by the donor.
