Scottsdale Community College student Shaylene Waggoner has built her life around a personal mission to serve others. As a proud single mom, she shares that same message with her two children, a son in high school and a daughter at ASU. Her spirit of generosity was renewed when she participated in a 1Mission trip to Mexico to build a house for a family of four struggling with poverty. The trip was just four days, but the lessons she learned will last a lifetime.
“It was a challenging experience. My heart was overcome with joy when looking into the eyes of that single mother with three boys whose daily lives were filled with uncertainty. Being able to secure a safe place for her family to sleep meant everything to her and to me. I contributed my skills to better their lives. That’s what living is about for me…serving others.”
Currently, Shaylene is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree and hopes to finish in 2017.
