Our Scholars

Tomas Almanaz

“I now see how hard work and overcoming adversity truly pays off in striving toward my goals.”

Tomas knows that change is part of everyday life.  Three years ago, he shook up his life and relocated to Phoenix from Chicago.  He also decided to return to college full-time with a goal to graduate by December, 2017, with an Associate’s degree in Construction Management.  His days and nights are long as he works full-time for a general contractor and carries a full class load at MCC.

As a recipient of the J. Doug Pruitt Scholarship, tuition and books are covered, but he’s on his own to meet all other living expenses.  “I’m working on the biggest construction job site in Arizona, Marina Heights.  I work 40 to 60 hours and six days a week. I supervise a group of five to 20 workers in various tasks to entire quality production in a fast, yet safe manner.”

With a smile, he adds, “In class, I’m usually older than my classmates and try to be a role model as someone who depends on them self to make their dreams come true.”
