Roxanne

“I am not merely chasing my dreams; I am working tirelessly to turn them into reality.”

“I chose my major when I was in fifth grade,” says PC student Roxanne Carbajal. “I remember going to school an hour early to learn how to do algebra; it was my favorite part of the day. Ever since then, I’ve loved math,” she says. Her success with math continued, as Roxanne tested into higher and higher match classes throughout high school. “I knew right away accounting was for me” she says, reflecting on choosing her major at Phoenix College. “This past summer, I faced a daunting hurdle: the pressing need for textbooks, money for transportation and tuition. Like many students, I found myself living paycheck to paycheck, making it increasingly difficult to make ends meet,” she said. Also like most PC students, Roxanne works while attending school. But, when Roxanne’s mom got sick, the savings Roxanne had built up over the summer went to pay hospital and doctor bills. So, she approaches school one semester at a time, trying not to get overwhelmed juggling work and homework, paying for tuition and books, while also helping her mom pay bills. For Roxanne, being successful means she does not have to worry every day about her finances, and that she will be able to help take care of her family, which she says makes her happy. “I’m applying to the PC Honors Program, to further my academic success and support. And, I’ve been accepting into the HSI EXCELlence Program, which is opening doors to new opportunities for growth, an exciting journey I'm eager to embark upon,” Roxanne says. Roxanne’s days are filled with purpose, in her role a lead receptionist, addressing client concerns, helping with promotion and social media, and training new employees.  The work is equipping her with skills in sales, revenue management, marketing, cash handling, and more. At night, Roxanne does homework alongside her little sister, and is thankful for the financial support scholarships provide, allowing her to concentrate on her studies, and worry a little less about the family finances. “The Bear Scholarship is a lifeline for me,” Roxanne says. After graduating from Phoenix College with her associate's degree in business accounting, Roxanne plans to pursue a bachelor's degree, and then secure a great job in a corporate office. “I am not merely chasing my dreams; I am working tirelessly to turn them into reality.” Read Roxanne's full story, here.

"I was worried that my lack of internet and not having transportation to go to campus to use the internet...

Thank you! This scholarship will help me pay for my internet and I'll be able to do my online classes. I was worried that my lack of internet, and not having transportation to go to campus to use the internet there, was going to cause me to fall behind. Now,  I will be able to pay my internet and finish my classes, all thanks to your kindness and generosity. This makes me happy because I will stay on track and not have to repeat any classes next semester. I currently have a 3.7 gpa and am planning to apply for the honors program next semester. My education is important to me because I am a first generation. I am the youngest of six siblings, and neither my parents or older siblings finished high school nor have a college education. Not only will I be the first in my family to be getting a degree, but I am also inspiring and setting a great example to my children. I am currently enrolled in both GCC and RSC. I initially started at RSC with the College Credit Pathway to GED scholarship program. I started GCC earlier this year because I wanted to take my math classes in person, which I did in the spring and summer, but I am now taking Creative writing 160 online. I just finished my last class required for my GED with the College Credit Pathway and am now ready to continue my education. My goal is to get my associate degree in biomedical sciences and then transfer to ASU to obtain my bachelor's degree. After that, I plan on attending Midwestern University to become a Dentist. I also want to get a double major in Creative Writing and hope to publish my own books one day. I know that I have a long path to take, but my passion for dentistry and writing motivates me to continue my education.  Once again, thank you for the kindness and generosity of gifting me this scholarship. It truly means a lot to me, and it will help me continue my classes, and stay on track in my education journey.

"Having this funding will allow me to focus on school without worrying about making ends meet."

I cannot express how thankful I am to be gifted this chance to afford school. With your funding, I can now pay for books and supplies needed for my studies. On October 30th, I will be starting the Phlebotomy Program. Just the past month, I had to abruptly quit my job due to the mental and physical stress it gave me. Ever since then, I have been struggling to find a job that interests me. That is when I came across this program and thought to myself, "This is what I want to do!" I have always been interested in entering the medical field and this opportunity spoke out to me. Within just a few months, I will be able to get my certificate and enter the workforce. Having this funding will allow me to focus on school without worrying about making ends meet. Once again, thank you for this support and I will not take it for granted!

"With this scholarship and the amazing teachers at Mesa, I have been able to show that not only can I...

"Let me just say thank you, thank you with all my heart! I am greatly honored that you have selected me for this scholarship. I am currently attending Mesa Community College at the Dobson campus and I am pursuing a degree in Automated Industrial Technology with an added certification in Robotics. I am one of the top students in all of my classes and I plan to continue to be a top performer. With this scholarship I am able to accomplish that goal more easily because I will have more time to focus on my studies and not need to worry about paying for them or the supplies I'd need in those classes. With the Robotics class in particular I am very proud to share that I am 2-3 weeks ahead of class studies. I have been able to be diligent in my studies and maintain a high A+ grade in the class. I am very proud of the fact that I have a 3.26GPA now. In the past I had blown off the GPA score because I was always told I could never achieve what I wanted to. With this scholarship and the amazing teachers at Mesa I have been able to show that not only can I achieve my goals, I can surpass them and keep improving past what I thought was possible. I am very humbled and eternally grateful that you helped me with my educational goals and I will strive everyday to push myself to achieve excellence."

“I will make the most out of this opportunity and truly appreciate the gracious donation.”

Michael attends Scottsdale Community College and has aspirations of becoming a screenwriter, after working in corporate America for 15 years. It's been a huge change for him to jump back into a classroom and scholarships help to relieve some of the financial burden of becoming a full time student. “I have always prided myself on helping and leading others and it is nice to be able to receive the same kind of good will at a time of transition in my life,” he said. “I will make the most out of this opportunity and truly appreciate the gracious donation.” Eagle Feather: Dyami Jackson, Scottsdale Community College

Thanks to scholarships, Scottsdale Community College (SCC) student Deacon is able to continue his education and utilize his award for lab expenses, class fees, and tuition. He said, “Since being a first generation student I have little guidance, so in this upcoming fall semester, I will be able to focus without having financial stress.” The reason Deacon chose Culinary Arts was because of the Navajo Nation and living amongst his family who dealt with some health problems and struggled with weight issues. “Going to the nearest grocery store was a couple of hours away from where we lived,” he said. “It was always better to choose unhealthy foods that were simple but fast and could have an abundance.” Deacon would hear families talk about things in diets they would try to implement but fail because of having financial issues. He chose his path in education to help find a healthy and affordable way to live and he’s determined to aid those with his education. “My goals and aspirations would not have been possible without my scholarship donation and I would like to thank those responsible for allowing me to continue my education at SCC.”
