South Mountain Community College

South Mountain Community College (SMCC) is one of the most diverse campuses in the Maricopa County Community College District, with more than 80 percent of its student population annually identifying as minority. SMCC is federally identified as both a Hispanic- and Minority-Serving Institution and provides services to a rich mix of growing rural, urban, and suburban neighborhoods. SMCC works with local business leaders to listen to industry needs and respond with careers in thriving industry sectors and for newly emerging and in-demand jobs. Currently, the college provides an incredible array of career and academic programming ranging from hands-on construction industry training to the fully-accredited Bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Sciences.

SMCC Construction Trades Institute

Here in Phoenix, the population is expected to double by 2030, and construction is in huge demand. Focused on hands-on experience in dedicated construction labs taught by real-world instructors, the CTI provides opportunities for students to earn a certificate in just one semester, allowing them to enter the workforce as quickly as possible.

SMCC Verna McClain Student Emergency Fund

To reach the workforce, a student has to complete their educational goals, but far too often it is the unexpected life emergencies that derail a student’s plan: a car breaking down, an unexpected medical emergency, a utility bill or even food insecurity. The Verna McClain Student Emergency Fund provides up to $500 to students within 48 hours to help them overcome these unexpected hurdles, and stay on track to finishing their educational goals.

SMCC Storytelling Institute

In today’s 24/7 “always on” world, the ability to tell a story has saturated almost every industry. From commanding a boardroom, to pitching a business idea, to standing in front of the media, to leading a team, an individual’s ability to persuade, motivate, and captivate is vital in today’s business world.

This is our most flexible fund, allowing the college to address a variety of needs as they arise.
